Uganda
- Most nationalities need a visa, applied for online through Uganda’s official eVisa portal before you travel.
- Uganda no longer issues visas on arrival, so apply in good time.
- A single-entry tourist visa costs $50.
- A yellow fever vaccination certificate is required for every visitor.
Rwanda
- Visas are available on arrival for all nationalities, or online in advance through Irembo, Rwanda’s official portal.
- A 30-day single-entry tourist visa costs $50.
- Citizens of African Union, Commonwealth and Francophonie countries can visit visa-free for up to 30 days.
- A yellow fever certificate is only required if you arrive from a country with yellow fever risk, which includes Uganda.
The East Africa Tourist Visa
If you are visiting both countries, the East Africa Tourist Visa is usually the best choice. It costs $100, lasts 90 days, allows multiple entries and covers Uganda, Rwanda and Kenya. Apply through the country you will enter first, and travel to that country first.
Crossing between the two countries
We use three road crossings, choosing whichever gives the shortest drive for your route:
- Cyanika: the quickest link between Volcanoes National Park and southern Bwindi.
- Katuna (Gatuna): the main road between Kigali and Kabale, for Bwindi and the south-west.
- Mirama Hills (Kagitumba): between Akagera and Mbarara, the gateway to Lake Mburo and Queen Elizabeth. Open around the clock.
